Personality: Mataoka, or Pocahontas as she is most commonly known by, is most often an empathic mother or older-sisterly figure to the people she is close with. She is calm, perceptive, mellow and mature, frequently serving as the much-needed voice of reason in upsetting situations. Because Pocahontas is also an incredibly contemplative individual and is given to long, sombre periods of serious thought, she may come across as intimidating, aloof or exceedingly solemn (thereby rendering her ‘uninteresting’) to many.

In fact, at heart, Pocahontas is quite the passionate woman. She possesses a strong sense of self and justice (thus explaining her involvement and commitment to many causes and activist groups, both inside and outside of college) and, most of all, a keen sense of yearning for discovery. Pocahontas is deeply curious about the world and its ways, nature, people and herself. She constantly strives for everyday to be an eye-opening experience and is very open to new situations and people.

BIOGRAPHY: Wahunsenasawk’s greatest pride and joy had nothing to do with becoming one of the wealthiest producers in Powhatan. It had nothing to do with the fourth house he’d built in the compound (making an extensive area exclusively his) and it even had little to do with the five sturdy and sensible boys he had raised. His greatest pride and joy was birthed in the form of little Mataoka, his youngest child and only daughter, whose lovable, frolicsome and inquisitive nature soon earned her the beloved nickname of Pocahontas. As young Pocahontas romped in the mud with the boys and sang on her mama’s knees, it soon became inevitable that she was the brightest light in their home and the favourite of everyone in the conservative family.

Pocahontas’ presence became even more necessary than it already was when her mother died unexpectedly. It was Pocahontas, only ten at the time, who quickly slipped into her mother’s shoes, both physically and figuratively. She assumed her mother’s chores and duties immediately and became everyone’s pillar of support. It continued to be Pocahontas’ laughter, merriment and vivacious nature who provided the primary source of comfort to the devastated family. So it wasn’t until a couple of years later that Wahunsenasawk finally discovered that Pocahontas had been secretly crying in her bed several nights a week ever since his wife’s death.

Pained and guilt-stricken, Wahunsenasawk could not think of what to do regarding his beloved daughter. An opportunity arose when Pocahontas was thirteen; Wahunsenasawk’s closest friend and business partner was planning to stay in the inner city for a year. As much as Wahunsenasawk grieved at the thought of the departure of his daughter, who had never been separated from him since birth (nor barely taken a step out of Powhatan), Wahunsenasawk decided to send Pocahontas along with him in hopes that Pocahontas’ exposure to new sights and sounds would alleviate some of her sorrow. Pocahontas was extremely upset about leaving (her plants! her trees! her dogs and cats and chickens and her beloved family!) and threw up one of the greatest tantrums that the family had ever seen.

The brief stay in the inner city accomplished a number of things. Firstly, it forged a rift between Pocahontas and her father. Although Wahunsenasawk’s hopes had come true and Pocahontas did in fact, after all, gain much invaluable insight and broadened her horizons, Pocahontas could not forget her father sending her there against her will. Neither did Pocahontas return, bubbling with strange new ideas of a large world that a traditional Wahunsenasawk had never really approved that much of, sit well with the old parent. Finally, this associate of Wahunsenasawk’s who had so kindly taken Pocahontas in for that period of time had a son named Kocoum. Kocoum, young as he was, was deeply taken by Pocahontas. She was strange and sulky and unleashed torrents of questions at a time, but for some reason he could not take his eyes off her when she laid on her stomach and flipped through huge picture books of animals and plants, eyes bright and wide with great wonder.

As she grew, Pocahontas was to ace all of her academic examinations, beating most of the kids at her neighbourhood school and even her own brothers. Her stay in another world had changed her; a greater curiosity fuelled her thirst for knowledge and she became an exceptional student. Though she never abandoned her farming duties and her long, spiritual and solitary walks through woods and fields (in fact, she became steadily more proficient and capable with farming abilities), Wahunsenasawk began to worry that he was losing his daughter to the rest of the world. When Pocahontas was eighteen, Wahunsenasawk proposed the idea of her marriage to Kocoum. It made sense, after all – Kocoum was the son of his best friend and most invaluable business partner; Kocoum himself was now a great producer in the locality as well and he was clearly still besotted with Pocahontas after all this while. Pocahontas would make an excellent farmer’s wife, and though she would never reside in his house again, at least she would always be nearby.

Needless to say, this proposal shocked and deeply saddened Pocahontas. Pocahontas never rejected the idea outright, but her immediate reaction was to apply for a scholarship to Balamb University. The girl had been grappling with whether or not to pursue further studies in her area of preference, though clearly she loved the natural landscapes of her home more than anything in the world. The scholarship meant two things: the first and more obvious one was that Pocahontas would be living away from home once again. The second issue was that since said scholarship sponsored her education and her dormitory expenses, Pocahontas need not be dependent on her father - although he very clearly had the means to support her education. Pocahontas thus became the only female in their recent family history to obtain a university education. The marriage issue was never brought up again, but neither has it been fully resolved. Wahunsenasawk’s idea and Pocahontas’ resolve brought about an irreversible strain in their relationship. The poor father finally realized that in wanting to keep her closer to him, he had resulted in her moving away.

Currently, Pocahontas resides (for most of the week) in Balamb University’s dormitory. She is in her second year, pursuing courses in zoology, ecology and botanical science, and is involved with quite a number of clubs and collegial activities that are committed to environmental or moral causes. She is also active in sports like track and canoeing (her upbringing among boys in an outdoor environment ensured her athleticism). A few times a week, Pocahontas is a home tutor to younger students, so that she can pay off expenses not sponsored by her scholarship. Although her relationship with her father is nothing like it was, Pocahontas still returns home during the weekends and whenever else she is able to. She is still deeply attuned to nature, detesting the ‘sterility’ of her school compound and dormitories, and for her, Powhatan is, and can only be, her only home.
